This May, FDK Junior debuted its inaugural lighting collection—2025 Capsule 01: Rooted in Nature—at Shelter by Afternoon Light, a new design fair featuring over 100 independent studios. Held in the Starrett-Lehigh Building, the show was a convergence of emerging and established makers whose work shares a reverence for craft, form, and material.
The collection—comprising a wall sconce, table lamp, and floor lamp—was shaped in close collaboration with Nicolas Newcomb Studio, where each piece was formed, cast, glazed, and fired by hand. The components were brought to life by John Wells Metal LLC, whose precise attention to structure gave the lights their final function and finish. These partnerships were generous in spirit and process—reminding me of the quiet, iterative rhythms of nature that first inspired the work.
Shelter offered the opportunity not just to share these pieces, but also to reflect on the time, labor, and collaboration embedded in their making. I’m deeply grateful to the makers who brought this capsule collection to life, and to my team who shaped its path forward.
With Capsule 01, marks the foundation for a growing body of work: an offering of high craftsmanship, made slowly in Brooklyn, with reverence for the materials, the story they hold, and the ways they illuminate space.
